GIOVANNI IS HERE, by Mercedes Cohen, directed by Michael Cohen

A triumphant story of rescue and resistance, Giovanni is Here centers on a Catholic family who courageously conceal a young Jewish woman when Italy becomes a German occupied country in 1943. Each person's survival depends on finding an inner strength to persevere and hold on to hope, love, and laughter.


ROLES for 9 actors. (3 female lead roles, 3 male major character roles, 3 minor characters)

Maria Romano—Young lady in her late twenties/early thirties.  She’s engaged to Carlo. Angelo is her father and Nonna is her grandmother.( Female:25-35)

Anna “Nonna” Romano—Angelo’s mother and Maria’s grandmother.  She’s very down to earth and outspoken. Very spry for her age and she’s not afraid to voice her opinion or play practical jokes. (Female: over 55)

Belle Levi—Also a young lady in her late twenties.  She’s married to Benjamin.  She has been working as a dress designer in her parents’ tailor shop. (female: 22-32)

Angelo Romano—He works at the bureau of records.  Maria’s widowed father and Nonna’s son (Male over 40.)

Benjamin Levi—Belle’s husband, was an intern, but when the war broke out he joined the partisans. (Male: 25-38).

Carlo Dominico—Maria’s fiancé.  He’s been working as a translator. (Male: 25-35)

Policeman 1—Charged with the task of seeking out Jews, foreigners and anyone without proper paperwork.(over 18)

Policeman 2—Underling following orders of the other policeman, but not very enthusiastic about the job. .(over 18)

Mario—a barber (over 30)
