Adapted from the book, “Hiding Horst: Memoirs of a Jewish Boy As told by Horst “Fred” Ferber”, written by Becky White PLAYING April 27- May 6, 2012 AUDITION DATE
CALL BACKS PERFORMANCES:
THE PLAY This is a true story of a twelve-year-old boy, Horst Ferber, forced into hiding in Nazi-occupied Holland. Before the war he had a few months of piano lessons, learning the major and minor scales and a numeric melodic system. While in hiding, he used this limited knowledge to teach himself how to play the piano using only his imagination and a tabletop. After the war ended he was able to sit down at a piano and play beautifully, proving to his father that his destiny did not point towards him becoming a doctor, but a musician.
Harmony in Hiding is not “another holocaust survivor story”, but the inspirational tale of a boy’s will to follow his dream despite all odds. Characters: 7 male, 4 female The play will be performed in ensemble fashion with the exception of two roles: Fred (65) Happy-go-lucky, always a glint in his eye, devoted musician, a lover of life Horst (12-15) Fred as a boy, an avid reader, a devoted student to music-especially piano, curious, a dreamer The actors chosen for these two roles will only play these roles throughout the play. All of the other numerous roles (at least 24) will be played by the following actors: 1 Male 16-mid 20’s 1 Male (30-40) 2 Male (40-50) 2 Male (50+) 1 Female (20-30) 2 Female (30-40) 1 Female (60-70) The ensemble will create the playing space and many of the sound and scenic effects. There will be quick changes from one character to another as well as changes in creating the physical world of the play. The play will be staged in a very fluid manner and the ensemble will be continuously engaged in quickly creating many characters and providing movement throughout the play. Actors can request an email file of the script or make an appointment to sit and read a hard copy at the Barn before auditions. Sides for cold read will be provided for the roles of Fred and Horst. For the ensemble, a 1 minute dramatic monologue is requested. Any dance or physical theatre experience is a plus for the ensemble. Non-AEA. No actor stipends.
