Crossing Delancey by Susan Sandler
Directed by Adrian Elfenbaum
September 13 – October 13, 2024
A story of unexpected love kicks off Ross Valley Players’ new season. Modern Manhattan dating collides with traditional folkways in playwright Susan Sandler’s humorous ode to the connections that make life worthwhile. Sandler also wrote the Golden Globe-nominated film of the same name. RVP welcomes back director Adrian Elfenbaum, architect of last season’s hit, It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play. Elfenbaum summarized his affection for Crossing Delancey, a 1985 New York Jewish Repertory Theatre premiere by saying, “Izzy’s journey reminds us that when we’re feeling lost our roots can often guide us to where we need to go.”
Spirited Izzy, a dreamy bookseller, navigates New York City’s singles scene as best she can while fielding colorful advice from her resourceful but increasingly desperate-for-a-wedding grandmother, Bubbie. Enter Hannah, a fan of Bubbie’s cooking and a professional Cupid. Can “good catch” Sam, a humble Lower East Side pickle vendor with a literary soul, triumph over suave best-selling author Tyler, the fueler of Izzy’s fantasies?
