SYNOPSIS:
In this tense and gripping thriller, set in 1944 Greenwich Village, a recently blinded woman named Susan Hendrix becomes the target of three con men searching for a mysterious doll filled with illicit goods. Unaware of the doll’s true value, Susan is drawn into a dangerous game of deception and survival. As the criminals’ plot unravels and the stakes rise, Susan must rely on her wits—and her heightened other senses—to turn the tables on her attackers. Jeffrey Hatcher’s adaptation of Frederick Knott’s classic play brings a darker, more psychologically driven edge to the suspenseful tale.
ROLES:
These roles are open to anyone to audition. All character descriptions are suggestions. Please note that the role of Gloria is for a young person. A parent or guardian may required to be in attendance at all rehearsals and performances.
Susan Hendrix (Female, 20s–40s)
A recently blind woman learning to live independently. Intelligent, resourceful, and determined, but initially unsure of her capabilities. Over the course of the play, she transforms from a vulnerable figure into a courageous and clever heroine who must outwit dangerous men in a life-or-death situation. She is emotional and narrative core of the play.
Sam Hendrix (Male, 20s–40s)
Susan’s husband, Sam is a former military man (updated for the 1944 setting). Kind, protective, and supportive of Susan, though sometimes unintentionally patronizing.
Gloria (Female, 9–13)
A young girl who lives upstairs and helps Susan with chores. Strong-willed and sometimes bratty, but becomes a key ally to Susan. Gloria shows growth from petulance to bravery.
Harry Roat Jr. / Sr. (Male, 30s–50s)
The main antagonist, Roat is cold, calculating, and menacing. He’s intelligent and manipulative and enjoys the psychological games he plays with Susan.
Mike Talman (Male, 30s–50s)
Appears at first to be kind and helpful, pretending to be an old friend of Sam’s. In truth, Mike’s a con man working with Roat. He plays the “good cop” in the manipulation. More sympathetic than the others, but still complicit. His conscience leads to internal conflict
Carlino (Male, 30s–60s)
Another con man, impersonating a police detective, Carlino is more of a thug or brute than Mike — the “bad cop” counterpart. Carlino is nervous, impatient, and easily rattled, especially as things start to spiral.
